Equipping Youth and Families for Everyday Life

The Life Skills Program at ICI provides practical training that helps youth grow in confidence, independence, and responsibility. Through hands-on learning and guided instruction, students gain tools that support healthy decision-making and prepare them for real-life responsibilities.

Life Skills programming is designed to complement ICI’s other programs and may be offered as stand-alone workshops or integrated into after-school, leadership development, and internship experiences.

What Life Skills Programming Includes

Life Skills offerings vary based on volunteer expertise, student needs, and program schedules. Topics may include:

  • Financial responsibility and budgeting

  • Job readiness and workplace expectations

  • Cooking and basic nutrition

  • Personal organization and time management

  • Basic home and car maintenance

Classes are led by ICI staff and volunteer professionals who bring real-world experience into the classroom.

Who Participates in Life Skills

Through intentional mentorship and responsibility, Life Skills programming primarily serves youth enrolled in ICI programs. Some sessions are also open to families and parents, allowing skills to be reinforced at home.

Students who participate in leadership development and internship opportunities often engage in budgeting and financial literacy training as they prepare for increased responsibility and paid roles.

How Life Skills Support Long-Term Growth

Life Skills classes help students connect everyday decisions with long-term outcomes. Through practice and repetition, students are encouraged to:

  • Build confidence in managing practical responsibilities

  • Develop habits that support independence and reliability

  • Understand expectations related to work, money, and accountability

  • Apply problem-solving skills in real-life situations

These lessons support students as they move toward adulthood, employment, and leadership opportunities.

Learning Through Relationships

While Life Skills classes focus on practical instruction, they are rooted in relationships. Staff and volunteers take time to listen, encourage questions, and support students as they navigate challenges related to school, work, and family life.

Faith and values are reflected through example, care, and encouragement, creating space for meaningful conversations alongside practical learning.
